We hope to submit the proposal by next week. Meanwhile, here's how you can help:
- Spread the word - chances of this project being successful get better if more people are aware of it.
- Speak to your HR/powers-that-be about pitching in with donations.
- Volunteer to manage this project within your company. You don't even have to step on to the road, just make sure that your company's employees are aware of this project and are willing to try this experiment that is good for everyone.
- If you know any higher ups in any FM channels or newspaper companies that would be willing to become media partners for this project, please pass on their details to us.
Please post your comments.

Hi, first off, congratulations on the remarkable effort.
I truly believe in saam daam dand bhed.
We know that dand (fines/challans) is not working in fixing the traffic issue. And bhed does not apply.
You are working on saam (imparting knowledge/creating awareness) and I believe we also need to look at daam.
How can we provide an incentive to people to do the right things? A few ideas I was toying with:
1. Create an association / NGO for traffic related issues
2. Encourage people to join this body
3. To join they have to pledge to follow a simple logical set of rules. (the awareness part)
4. There should be an annual membership fee
Now the daam part.
1. See if we can tie-up with
a. Traffic police for what ever leeway is possible
b. Insurance companies for cheaper premiums for vehicle insurance for members
c. Hospitals for priority treatment in case of accidents.
d. Maybe cover the members for accident insurance
e. Reserved parking?
f. P2P Traffic updates (SMS/we are IT guys can think of some implementation)
g. Above all there should be a prestige issue being a part of the body and placing the sticker on their vehicle...
How to police that people are not joining the club for just the benefits?
- renewal is subject to no traffic violation. Not sure if that is possible
- annual refresher course ?
- you need to refer at least 2 people each year to be eligible for renewal
- We can provide them with a ticker that says 'i follow traffic rules' and followed by please report violation to this email address
- submit a personal victory story, of doing right in face of odds.
I am sure others can improve / extend these ideas.
Thanks again for your effort. Although I am not in Hyd, my heart is.
How about not letting cars with single riders go through cetain core areas that are notorious for chronic congestion? Or, taking this idea even further, not letting cars go through these major problem areas during peak hours in the morning and evening! Also, spreading the idea for car pooling and using public transporation as much as possible (ofcourse, there have to be enough number of vehicles to these key areas, luxury and ordinary, that can be utilized based upon the commuters' preference!)
@Madhu
What you're referring to is the High Occupancy vehicle lane. It is a good idea, but we cannot implement this until lane driving is followed by the commuters. Car pooling is again a good idea, but I guess we could start with pooling of cabs and If you're in Hyd, then would you like to help us with this? :)
@ Hitesh
Brilliant ideas(esp the one about roping in an insurance company). Let me give you an update on some of them:
1. Create an association / NGO for traffic related issues
Sameer: In the process of registering an association.
2. Encourage people to join this body
Sameer: Will need help from people like you to drive membership.
3. To join they have to pledge to follow a simple logical set of rules. (the awareness part)
4. There should be an annual membership fee
Sameer: Yes, we'd like to start off with a small fee that won't pinch people.
Now the daam part.
1. See if we can tie-up with
a. Traffic police for what ever leeway is possible
Sameer: Already met the police and they have promised to help.
b. Insurance companies for cheaper premiums for vehicle insurance for members
Sameer: will work on this today. Any contacts in insurance companies that you know of?
c. Hospitals for priority treatment in case of accidents.
sameer: I don't think we should prioritise treatment, but we can certainly tie up with the 108 ambulance service.(EHM)
d. Maybe cover the members for accident insurance
Sameer:Will check with the insurance company about how this can be worked out.
e. Reserved parking?
Sameer: doesn't look possible, because parking as such is difficult to find in Hyderabad:)
f. P2P Traffic updates (SMS/we are IT guys can think of some implementation)
sameer: check this: http://trafficinhyderabad.blogspot.com/2008/10/using-twitter-for-user-generated.html
There were some problems with Twitter, but apparently Google offers similar kind of service. Need to check on this.
g. Above all there should be a prestige issue being a part of the body and placing the sticker on their vehicle...
sameer: Yes and this can only happen if people take part in this movement/project. It has to be a people's movement because it is going to help everyone involved.
Wish you all the best :)
There is another initiative called Right2Walk which work on the similar lines, but with most of it's focus on getting the roads pedestrian friendly. How about combining the initiatives?
Hi Kannan
I am a Joint Secretary at Right2Walk. I am planning to use R2W for pedestrian safety and education for this project.
Sameer
Very nice to know. I got in touch with Kanthi Kannan regarding this yesterday to see if there is anything I can help with ...
I would like to be involved ...
Hi Kannan
Please email me at sikhoya at gmail .com
We can use your help with a couple of traffic initiatives we're planning.
